PC losing steam

Pentium II, 400 mhz system running Win 98,10 gb hd, 196 mb ram, stand alone. From a cold boot system runs smoothly. During course of day, system resources and performance degrade. Again, after cold boot all is well. Only running AOL, Quickbooks,inet explorer and msoffice 97 apps.
