pcmcia card problems

we have a notebook with windows ME the network card quit working so installed a new one ( linksys).
after setting up all of the network settings and reboot everthing works fine.
the next time we boot up will not work.
if you go into the network settings and make it think you changed somthing it wants to reboot and save settings , and after the reboot works fine again till the next boot.

have deleted all of the networking drivers and reinstalled aswell as windows me a couple of times.

am stumped any help would be great.
