possible virus

I have a win nt 4.0 server machine that suddenly would not network.
Our troubble shooting steps were as follows
check that the interface was up
pass
ping the outside world
fail
ping the intranet
fail
ping the local host
fail
uninstall/ reinstall tcp/ip
fail
the machine ‘s processor will be at 17% (its old) which is normal
then when I try to add a new protocol the pocessor pushes it up to 100%
as I stop services the the process drops
to 80-75 then shoots back up to 100%
thus denying me the cycles to reinstall tcpip
any ideas?
