Power supply, or my hard drive???

I am helping my friend with her computer and her problem was that while the pc was running, all of a sudden she heard a grinding noise from her pc. Moments later her monitor went out and every now and then the pc will power up. When I got it, the pcwont power up at all for me to troubleshoot. Does any one have any answers or suggestions?
