Printer Problem

I have a Canon 600e Bubble Jet. I just hooked it up to this new system. I keep getting a message saying “having trouble writting to LPT-1. Make sure the cables are connected properly, and that the printer is online”. I plugged it in, it has power, Ihooked up the parallel cable it is in correctly. So what could be prompting this message. I also downloaded their drivers from their web site. I cannot figure this one out. Please HELP!!!
