reading a file at the client side

how to read a file which is located at the client side . applets should be made trusted
to do the same. how to do that?. can we use
any scripting language (java script) to read
the file at the client side .if yes how?
which is easy whether touse trusted applets
or java script .
in partial fulfillment of my project iam
developing a B2B application in which
the data file consisting of BarCode|date|time|storeId situated at the client side should be read by a program coming from the server.please help me out.
