Recognizing Slave drive

I have a typical machine using a 1 GB IDE hard drive that I want to install a drive from another machine into to copy the files etc. I have the 2nd drive at the end of the ribbon cable that drive 1 is on. After setting the jumpers on the 2nd drive to be a slave I still can’t get the machine to see the drive. The OS is Windows 95 on both drives. How can I get the machine to see the 2nd drive?
