Removal of MBR virus

I would be most grateful for any advice about the following, i beleive i received a virus from emails, my systems is slow, programs crash, when i shutdown & then re-boot all is ok for a short time.
I installed Norton anti virus 2002 but cannot run it on my system, what can i do to get rid so my systems running as normal?
