Removed volume error message

I am receving the same error as a previous post: “The volume that was removed had open files on it. Next time Please check first to see if the volume can be removed”. I am running Windows 98 SE only, no other OS’s. It just started all of a sudden, could it be a sign that my hard drive is ready to crash or is something else happening?
