Resetting or Re-installing a PC

As an advanced end-user, I have still been unable to find a book or other publication that step by step will tell me how to erase a hard disc and restart from scratch.i.e. How to re-install all drivers, operating system etc. Also, how to clean out the registry.

Does anyone have any suggestions or references.
