Hi, Packard Bell Multimedia l197 running w95. Computer was fine, next it would not boot sucessfully. Message was Registry Problem, windows encountered an error accessing the system registry, restore from backup and restart. Registry Problem. Windows couldnt restore your registry. either a disk error occured or no valid backup copy exists. Use a utility such as Scandisk to check hard disk for errors and then reinstall windows. After shuting down the computer restarts in start up menu and anything you select wont let you boot into system. You go in a circle.
Message, Warning Windows 95 detected a registry configuration error choose safe mode to start windows a minimal set of drivers. I go through safe mode it brings me to the same error messages but never starts. I have done step by step and did not load the registry and nothing. It seems to stall at the loading of a sound/ modem driver but does eventually load. I bypassed windows drivers but still nothing. At a dos prompt I checked for a virus using chkdsk and it reports 655.* whatever the rest is and this number I was told indicates no virus. Other messages I have seen are The followinf file is missing or corrupted C:\\windows\dblbuff.sys. Also during scandisk it reported thatseveral files were found to be in error. what is unusual to me are the characters that it showed in the file name. They were the ace of spades, ?the letters FAwith a > over them what looks like a sun symbol, the letter a’like I show it and others I can’t recreate with the keyboard without inserting symbols.
what I tried to do was restore the registry from backup a command prompt using
Attrib -h -s -r C:\windows\system.dat and when I hit enter it reports no file found or bad command. I can’t dothe rest of this process because it won’t find the files. I get to the command prompt by using a 95 boot disk and from selecting command prompt from the F8 start menu. Neither wk.
