san disk card reader

I have an 1.4 athlon processor with 1 gig memory, and 3 40 gig drives. Msi k7t motherboard, running win98. The problem is when I plug the card reader into the onboard usb port I get the blue screen. If I boot up with it plugged in it says it found new hardware and the screen turns black with a green line across the top, and locks up, can’t even do ctrl-atl-del. All the proper drivers have been installed for the motherboard. I put a 4 port usb card in and it does the same thing. I can boot into safe mode and install the drivers but it will do the samething when it reboots. The lastest drivers have been downloaded for it, and it won’t work if I run that .exe and then plug it in either. Any ideas?
