Scandsk stops during scan

On my HP desktop computer, I have a real problem. When started up the scan disk starts. Part of the way through it prompts the message: scan was stop prematuraly press any key to resume. When key is pressed it goes to the Windows start up screen and then freezes. Is there a cure for this? In need of assistance.
