Scanner install created HP printer Probl

On installing a Paperport One Touch scanner, my HP 697C printer stopped functioning properly. It started ‘picking up’ a sheet of paper and holding it in the carriage path. During this time the power light blinks and the resume lights blinks. I have talked with both companies, downloaded all of their drivers, changed port type settings three times in BIOS and still will not work.
I removed all incidents of Papreport, reset BIOS to Spp on port and it works as it did orginally. Any ideas?
