Scndsk freezes at different sectors

Hi,
I have a laptop running W98 that at boot it tells me that there are bad sectors on the drive and that I should run scandisk. It tells me to always shut down correctly, which I did and do. The problem is this. When I try and run scandisk it frreezes on me at different sectors and does not proceed. I have waited half anf hour to an hour for it to proceed. I choose thorough and fix any errors that it finds.
Can anyone tell me the reason for the freeze.
