Screen Blankout

What would cause a screen to go blank rather than display the screensaver? Once I move the mouse the screen returns to the application that I’m using. The monitor is a Cybermax 17″. Windows 98, Pentium III 500 & 128MB Ram are in this system. Any help will be deeply appreciated.
