serial mouse & printer

Im having trouble installing a new mouse into my system unit, when i connect the mouse to my system unit, the system failed to detect my mouse, what could be the problem? the same goes with my printer the system unit also failed to detect my printerwhat could be the problem? please send me a solution to solve my problem? thank you.
