Serial Ports?

I have a couple PCs with the serial ports apparently not working they were once attached to a Zund vinyl flat bed cutter and just stopped working. I have built a loop back plug but can’t seem to find any freeware to test the ports with. Everyone wants $400. for diaganostic software kits. Anyone know of any freeware to test with a loopback plug?
