Sharpening ones Skills

I was a college computer instructor before I came here in the U.S. I am not authorized to work yet since I was just petitioned by my wife. I tried and still kept looking for a company that would sponsor me but, I guess I lack the experience. I have a degree in Computer Science and I am a striving Visual Basic Programmer. I need to get my skills sharpened but, how and where am I going to get more training and exposure in this kind of situation.
