Slow access to internet.

I am using a Compaq 5400 laptop, win98 4.10.1998 version.

When I access the internet by any means such as dial-up or by Network with a T-1 (LAN).

Web pages download very very slow, also downloads have quadrupal even on the Lan connection.

Iam using IE 5.5 or Opera 5. when usingdial up I use AOL 6.0. IM will not authorize!

Any suggestions as to why the problems?
