Sound skipping in time with HD activity

P4 machine running WIN ME. Sound skips in time with HD activity light during games. Sometimes it stops after a few minutes, sometimes not. Was using onboard sound, so I switched to a PCI sound card and disabled onboard sound in BIOS. Skipping still occurs (thought maybe HD was interrupting the onboard). All latest drivers installed. Any help appreciated!
