Sound suddenly quit

Sound suddenly stopped working. Checked through device manager, removed and installed drivers many times. There is a conflict, but I am not sure on how to go about fixing that. I recently added a USB port with a PCI card for a DSL modem. Can anyone help? am running windows 98 and 32MB RAM
