Sporadic Re-Boots Upon Dialup to Net

My e-machines box running Win 98 has the nasty habit of re-booting 50% of the time when I dial up to a Net provider. I use three different providers but it happens with all. Have re-loaded Windows, scanned for viruses, faced Mecca and prayed — nothing helps. Am accepting all suggestions — thanks.
