system slow down

I recently added an ethernet card and my pc allbut stopped. It takes a long time to get through the boot sequence, and if that isn’t bad enough when the desktop loads you can make a pot of coffee and two ham and cheese sandwiches.

the system is aDFI motherboard an evergreen pII upgrade cpu with 64m sdram and an updated phoenix bios vintage 2000.
