system speed up!!

Is there any other ways to speed up a computer other than running scandisk/defrag/disk cleanup/virus check.(P III 5oo mhz.64mb ram,10gb hard disk is the configuration but i dont want to upgrade my system)

WHAT MAKES THE SYSTEM SLOW???
PLS HELP.
