Temporary install 2nd harddrive

How would I, temporarily, install a second harddrive, for the sole purpose of removing data from it, and copying this data to the first hard drive? The original computer the harddrive was in, is no longer operative. What are some of the things I need to look out for as far as conflicts? And/or what are some of the things I need to make sure I do?
