The Computers DEAD!!! sometimes

by sam3 . Updated 24 years, 12 months ago

A friend bought a new “barebones system” with power supply,128 meg mem,500 mhz. chip, onboard modem and sound, agp video card, keyboard, mouse. No monitor,no harddrive.
I loaded(copied) all her data on to a larger harddrive, tested it for a few days and gave it to her.
First night online, Bam! it goes dead in the middle of sending email. I mean no power, dead, press the power button nothing happens.

When I come over the next day, remove all the cables, take out the cards, plug in the power, fires right up. But now the onboard modem won’t work. replace with a isa modem ok.
Couple days later…. late at night sending email Bam dead again. reseat mem, reseat cards…. Ok it works.
Couple days later… dead as a doornail! ( when she goes touse it.
Call tech support. After a bit of back and forth, he says,”send it back, we’ll check it here.) I send the box back.
He runs it straight for 10 days even downloading LARGE files (using HER AOL software, and id.)not a problem.
Back it comes, I bring over my surge protector (with tele connectors) connect everything (her old monitor, her old HP Deskjet printer)it runs fine till I leave, BUT you guessed it, DEAD that night in the middle of sending email. and wont go back on.
I tell her to remove all cables in the back (incl power, monitor printer) wait 1 min. and then plug inpower cord only. Its on. I tell her plug in ONLY monitor, keyboard, mouse, power. It goes dead!
Help!!!!!!!
