The Perfect PC – Preface Question

by maxwell edison . Updated 24 years, 3 months ago

In my quest to build the “perfect” PC, realizing, of course, that it could only be “perfect” for my particular application and not necessarily all applications, I pose the following configuration considerations to my esteemed peers, seeking their suggestions, comments, opinions and advice.

To prevent an extremely lengthy question, and in an attempt to focus on each particular area of the PC, I’ve broken down this question into several smaller ones. I have a separate question posted for each of the following areas:

The Perfect PC – Processing Power

The Perfect PC – Video and Resolution

The Perfect PC – Drives and Storage

The Perfect PC – Other Components

The Perfect PC – OS and Software

Keep in mind, however, that all of these individual components will be combined into one “Power PC”, intended to work together to maximize performance in the most cost effective manner. I’m looking for the “most bang for the buck”, so to speak

For the purpose of this study, by the way, the computing environment is a mid-sized engineering/architectural office using Microsoft Office products, AutoCAD 2000 graphics design software, and a variety of engineering calculation programs, as well as a fairly “typical” financial application for billing and bookkeeping.

Where applicable, I’m looking for manufacturers, models, versions, and/or details on any suggested components, as well as (if possible) links to Web sites for those manufacturers and/or suppliers of any suggested component.

As I said, there are separate questions for several categories of consideration. Feel free, however, to leave additional comments and/or considerations as answers to this preface.

When we are finished with this study, we will have defined the “Perfect PC”.
