Ticket Tracking Systems

In Helpdesk ticket tracking (TTS)products like Remedy/Clarify/Siebel is the Customer Infromation Management System run on a seperate system and linked to the TTS or is it generally a module within the TTS itself? (In essence, how is it set up and linked to the TTS?)
