Toshiba 500 CDT laptop doesn’t see ram

Toshiba 500 CDT has 16 mb ram on board with an extra 16 mb. Removed 16 mb ram and installed 64 mb ram. Now laptop only sees 16 mb ram. Does not see original extra 16 mb ram. What shall I do?
