Unnecessary yap on network-how do I fix?

I’m not a sniffer genius yet. Can someone point me to the location or give information for a good sniffer utility or whatever to isolate excess traffic on the network? It needs to be fairly straightforward, know lots of protocols (IPX a must) and won’t rock the hell out of the network in the process. Thanks for your time!
