Upgrading SDRAM

I am running an AMD 450MHZ with a 100MHZ BUS and Windows 98SE.
I have tried several different Quantities (128MB,32MB,64MB)of RAM upgrades and I can’t read the updated total in windows, only at bootup.
I have tried OEM,Premium,Mitsubishi,etc.all tono prevail,
Why?
Does anyone know?
