video card problem

My coworker has a win98se machine that needed a complete re-install of the o/s. Since then,the onboard video card stopped working. He went out and bought a s-3 virge 3d card and installed it. When the machine boots it recognizes the card and the monitor works, but no other pci boards get seen. ie; the modem or sound card,etc. If he pulls it out, the others will work,but they wont work if the video card remains seated. Help!
