Video Modes with 20″ Monitor

My son has an HP522 (1.8 Ghz) and a SONY 20″
monitor. Some apps use vidow modes of 480×640
and these won’t display properly on his computer.
Is this a graphics card problem? Can he get
another graphics card to clear this up? (The
literaturewith the monitor said that this mode is
supported.)
