Virus- no display

Okay,
User told me he opened an email from a friend and downloaded an attachment and as he says “a million windows started popping up” and computer shut down. Now when he restarts the computer sounds like it is booting up but no display on screen. No option for anything. Just blank screen. When I heard that i thought virus. Hod do I fix this problem? This is his home computer. Thanks.
