VPN Connection Problem

Why does my laptop freeze when I try to disconnect a VPN connection? I am running Win98SE and dialing in via MSN to connect to a Novell 5.1 Server and an Exchange 5.5 email server. I have upgraded Win98, MSIE and MSN software to the most current versions. The connection works beautifully until I try to disconnect.
