What is L3 Cache memeory?

In addition to L1 and L2, I have heard that Intel’s new ITANIUM chip has L3 cache. Has anyone heard of L3 cache? Can you explain what it is and how it is different from L2 cache?

Please let me know if there are any references or white papers about L3 cache.
