What is lifespan of a surge protector?

I remember reading somewhere that once a surge protector handles a voltage surge, it is a one time deal and is useless at that point on. Is this correct or did I mis-read the article. I have been told this by another person as well, but there is never any documentation that comes with the surge protector as to this issue.
