White blank screen after boot up

My friend’s IBM Computer which has Millenium Editin intstalled in it, displays a white blank screen after it displays the millenium logo and it kicks itself out. Also it begins with scandisk, scanning the drive c. What could be the problem. Also it gives the message improperly shut down. Pls give me a clue.
