Will the real Com port please stand up

I show on my home computer a Com 1, a Com 2 (modem), and a Com 5. Com 2 and Com 5 seem to be in use. Com 1 looks to be physically unused, shows up in the System part of Control Panel, but I am unable to use it. I am curious how to get Com 1 funtional. Thank you.
