Win XP Modem forces reboot

I have a system running Win XP, after connecting a external USB modem and setting up all worked well. After the next hard boot-up when trying to accesss the net the system re-booted as soon as the connect selection was made. The modem was un installed the re installed and worked OK until the next hard boot. Again the system rebooted when connecting to net. Any ideas?
