I have an ABIT KT7A motherboard which uses the Via KT133A chipset with bios version ZT. Currently, I’m running Windows 2000 SP2 and Via 4 in 1 chipset drivers version 4.29. I would like to update these drivers to version 4.31 to fix a bug with my sblive card. However everytime I try to update or change the IDE driver it hangs the process. At this point I can end the task but am forced to reboot if I want to try it again. It doesn’t seem to matter what method I use. I’ve tried the via uninstall, changing it manually in device manager back to microsoft’s generic driver, and just plain “update driver”.
The thing that floors me is that safe mode makes no difference. In windows 98 you could do ANYTHING in safe mode. But it seems like the hal is still interfering in Windows 2000 safe mode.
So what I’m wondering is does anyone have any tricks up their sleeves for this kind of situation? I’m trying to avoid things like manually overwriting the file from the recovery console or reinstalling windows.
THanks,
