win95 software corruption

My PC would not boot up properly, called support and they said it was software problem and must re-install Windows 95.
My question is: if PC is turned off at night, can the software be affected by power surge, or more likely a virus/worm corrupted the software? Was wondering what to look for when I get it booted up again. Thanks!
