win98se resource problem?

win98se, laptop, dlink 10/100, modem
combo card, infared controller.
installed the combo card. modem works,
lan does not. removed the infared controller
from the network control panel, restart and
the lan works. However, win98 keeps
reinstalling the infared controller. After
restarting the lan quits working again.
Tried to disable the infared controller
in the hardware profile, but that locks
up the laptop on restart. Is there a
way to disable the infared controller or
prevent win98from reinstalling it. Or
is there something that can be done to
make the two work like they should.
With both installed I have no conflicts and
they are using different IRQ’s.
