Windows 2000 SP1 Not reading drive!

When I installed service pack 1 to win2k my E hard-drive (third drive in the computer) couldnt be read and it prompted me to format it…when I uninstalled the service pack, it was back to normal…I would like to have an up-to-date OS…any suggestions?
