Windows XP – First Thoughts?

by ebob . Updated 24 years, 11 months ago

I finally got around to installing WinXP Pro RC1 on one of my machines at home. So now it dual boots: Win2K Pro/WinXP Pro.

And my first thoughts: so far so good.

What I wanted was a system that provided the NT base (power, security, stability (relatively speaking)) but I also wanted to run some of my “older” games. Myst and The Neverhood, specifically, wouldn’t even load in Win2K, much less run. I suppose there was a hack or two I could have used, but I really don’t like that sort of thing. But I got both running in XP.

Neverhood was no problem. It just loaded and ran. Myst required that I go in and tell WinXP to run this in Win95 Compatibility mode (right-click icon on Start menu –> Properties –> Advanced (if I recall correctly) and select Compatibility –> Windows 95).

Other WinXP experiences? Well, all I’ve tried so far is these 2 games – a person needs priorities!

I would be interested to hear what the rest of you RC1’rs have experienced, so far.

Anybody just do an “upgrade” from NT, Win2K and/or Win9x?

(BTW: I intended this thread to be about Windows XP, NOT Office XP. Thanks.)
