Word’s,Excel’s drop downs are very slow

I installed Office97 on a new Compaq Deskpro
and other software (also installed the latest
Sr2b patch) but when in an excel or word the drop down tabs on the top of the screen like file,tools, and help .The drop down is very very slow but you won’t be able to select another option untill the drop down option on top that you last selected has finished scrolling down.It seems as if it was trying really hard to creat the graphics and text with the drop down box… I uninstalled office97 and reinstalled it and it seemed to work but it started again dropping down very slow (for example if you select file the drop down will take a good 5 seconds to fully drop down .?
