XP compressed folder error

I recently bought a desktop P4 with xp on it. I cannot gain access to any programs because of an error “compressed folder invalid or corrupt” which appears every time I attempt to open a program. I was trying to install a winmodem on it at the time and had upgraded the driver to Lucent 8.18 which still wouldn’t work.
