ColorOS 17 is getting glassy, fluid, and noticeably different.

OPPO is testing its Android 17-based software update with a redesigned interface that adds floating navigation controls, blurred surfaces, more responsive animations, and new features such as Lockscreen Island.

The update has not yet reached its stable release, but it points to a broader change in OPPO’s software strategy. Eligible OnePlus and realme devices are also expected to move closer to the same ColorOS platform, making this more than a visual refresh for OPPO phone owners.

One of the most visible changes in ColorOS 17 is a floating pill-style navigation bar that sits slightly above the bottom edge of the screen. The change gives navigation controls greater separation from the rest of the interface while making them easier to reach with one hand.

A report from Tech-ish, citing OPPO, noted that this change will be seen across OPPO’s system apps, rather than appearing only on the home screen.

OPPO is also pairing the new navigation design with its updated animation system. According to TechWiser, an upgraded Luminous Rendering Engine will allow elements to stretch, move, and settle into place as users swipe or tap, making navigation feel more responsive instead of relying on fixed transitions.

A different kind of glass

ColorOS 17 is also getting a frosted-glass treatment, with a translucent interface that makes it distinct from Apple’s Liquid Glass. The effect is paired with what OPPO calls Contour Glow, which adds lighting around interface elements to give them more depth and separation.

The glass-like design extends across parts of the system interface, including menus, panels and controls.

Tech-ish reports that OPPO is also using progressive blur, allowing the degree of background blur to vary based on the interface element and its position.

The result may immediately remind users of Apple’s Liquid Glass, but OPPO says ColorOS 17 is not copying Apple’s design. Rather than reproducing Apple’s refraction-heavy approach, OPPO’s implementation relies on its own combination of translucency, blur, glow, and motion to give the interface a more layered appearance.

ColorOS 17 adds Lockscreen Island

Beyond the visual redesign, ColorOS 17 adds several features aimed at everyday use.

The update introduces Lockscreen Island for displaying ongoing activities such as music, calls, and navigation.

One of the more notable additions is better connectivity with Apple’s ecosystem. OPPO’s O+ Connect enables compatible OPPO phones to work with iPhones for features such as calls and notifications. At the same time, file-sharing support is also being expanded to make transfers between the two platforms easier.

Under the hood, OPPO is also improving system performance. TechWiser reports improvements in app launch times, RAM management, and animation smoothness, although real-world gains will vary by device and hardware.

What devices will receive ColorOS 17?

ColorOS 17 is not limited to OPPO’s newest phones. Eligibility may also cover several generations of the Find, Reno, F, and K series.

There is no simple age cutoff for eligibility. OPPO has yet to publish a final official list, but the current lists from TechWiser suggest that several older models remain supported under their respective software-update commitments.

The update is currently in beta, with testing across selected markets including India, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The change is bigger for OnePlus and realme users, whose devices will be retiring OxygenOS and realme UI as separate interfaces. That makes ColorOS the central software platform across OPPO’s wider phone family.

What ColorOS 17 means for users

For users, the most immediate benefit is a newer and more secure software base. ColorOS 17 pairs with Android 17, so devices receiving the update also get Google’s underlying Android security and platform improvements, while OPPO adds its own system-level changes on top.

Performance is another part of the upgrade. OPPO is improving its rendering and memory management systems to reduce stutters, speed up app launches, and keep more applications available in memory. These changes are less visible than a redesigned interface, but they can have a bigger effect on everyday phone usage.

The update also changes how users interact with their phones. Floating navigation, more responsive animations, improved notifications, and Lockscreen Island alter common tasks rather than simply adding another set of features.

Better integration with iPhones also enhances the overall user experience, reducing the friction users who use both Android and iOS face.

OnePlus and realme owners face the most visible change. Eligible devices are moving away from OxygenOS and realme UI toward ColorOS, meaning users will have to adjust to OPPO’s interface and software choices. In return, the three brands are moving onto a shared software platform, which could make future development and updates more consistent across the group.

For now, the most important thing to watch is the stable rollout and final device list. Until OPPO confirms both, some of ColorOS 17’s biggest changes remain tied to beta builds and reported eligibility.
