Professionals planning a Mac upgrade could soon have another reason to wait: Apple reportedly plans to unveil its first touchscreen MacBook Pro and an OLED iPad mini around Oct. 27.
The company is planning a second product launch this month, around Tuesday, Oct. 27, according to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with Apple’s plans. The presentation is expected to combine an online video with an in-person media event, although Apple has not confirmed the date or products.
The centerpiece is reportedly a redesigned MacBook Pro available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. Both models are expected to feature OLED touchscreens, lighter designs and Apple’s Dynamic Island interface, replacing the familiar display notch.
The processor situation is less straightforward. Bloomberg previously reported that the redesigned laptops would use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, revising earlier expectations of M6 Pro and M6 Max processors. The MacBook Ultra name has also circulated in rumors, but the available reporting points to the MacBook Pro family instead.
More Macs and an OLED iPad Mini
Bloomberg also reports that Apple plans an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro and an iMac powered by M6 chips, both retaining their current designs.
The iPad mini is reportedly due for an OLED display, a front-facing camera repositioned for landscape video calls and a redesigned speaker system. Apple has not confirmed the tablet’s specifications. The reported launch would follow Apple’s announced Oct. 13 ‘Welcome home’ event, where new smart home products are expected.
The upgrade decision may come down to more than touch
For creative professionals, the redesigned MacBook Pro could offer a more noticeable change than a routine processor refresh. An OLED panel could improve contrast when editing photos and reviewing video, while a lighter chassis could make the laptop easier to carry between studios and work locations.
For buyers focused primarily on computing performance, the chip configuration will also matter. If the reported lineup materializes, buyers could be comparing M5 Pro or M5 Max configurations with an entry-level M6 model. Chip generation alone would not settle the performance comparison; confirmed configurations and independent benchmarks will matter.
The same caution applies to the iPad mini. OLED could improve contrast and dark-scene viewing, but its value will depend on the final display specifications, battery performance and price. Apple has not announced pricing or availability for the rumored products.
